Apple-themed session ideas

Autumn is here and it’s time to unpack all of those apple-themed music therapy interventions!
Here are some of my go-to apple session ideas:
- I love to use sorting mats for green, yellow, and red apples to work on colors and sorting. (These attribute apples work well, too)
- The book, “Ten Apples Up On Top” works perfectly to the tune of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”. It’s great for counting 1-10!
- “Do You Know How Apples Grow?” (tune: “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”). I have students work on sequencing by putting the steps of the growing process in order, from seed to apple-picking (or apple pie!). Free visuals HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE. Eg. Do you know how apples grow, how apples grow, how apples grow? Do you know how apples grow in the orchard? First, you plant the seed, plant the seed, plant the seed. First, you plant the seed in the orchard. Next, it grows into a seedling, into a seedling, into a seedling. Next, it grows into a seedling in the orchard. Then, the buds begin to blossom, begin to blossom, begin to blossom. Then, the buds begin to blossom in the orchard. Last, the blossom turns into an apple, into an apple, into an apple. Last, the blossom turns into an apple, in the orchard.
- Finally, I use my Apple Orchard visuals to work on WH-questions (students pick the correct visual from a field of three).
Want another great apple song for this time of year? Check out The Back to School Batch e-book by Amanda Ellis! “Apples in the Basket” is a super adorable song that she recorded (complete with violin!) for the e-book (in addition to many songs, including instrumental tracks for each!) and it works perfectly for color identification and works on listening skills (“If you have a green/red/yellow one, hold it up high and put it in the basket as it comes by.”).
